FG plans housing scheme for 17 million Nigerians abroad

THE Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria (FMBN) is working out modalities to roll out a diaspora product to assist Nigerians living abroad own homes in Nigeria.

Managing Director of the bank, Gimba Ya’u Kumo, who disclosed this at the fourth Nigeria Development Finance Forum in Washington DC, United States (US), said the product had become necessary, given the large number of Nigerians in the diaspora who wished to own homes in Nigeria and also as a means of reducing the housing deficit in the country.

“We realized that about 17 million Nigerians are living outside the country and most of them have plans to have houses and they have not been able to do so.

“We understand that over the years, people, who have been remitting money for the building or buying of a house have not been getting good results. Stories have followed this money.

“What we are trying to do is that by the time we develop the diaspora mortgage model, it will be a model whereby Nigerians living abroad who want to buy houses can resort to FMBN and, at the end of the day, if they do not take the mortgage, they can get refund of their money with interest,” he said.

Kumo added that the reason the bank had chosen the US was because out of the 17 million Nigerians all over the world, US had about 58 per cent, adding that “we are going to do our case study here and in the United Kingdom (UK). If it works well, we will try to replicate it in Asia and other parts of the world.”

He said the move would also lead to the inflow of finance from the diaspora to Nigeria, which would further assist to reduce the housing needs in the country.

The FMBN boss also said that the Utility Refinancing Company that would assist in financing the sector would kick off soon with the corporation of the World Bank, International Finance Corporation (IFC) and the Federal Ministry of Finance.

OSUN LEADING THE WAY IN EDUCATION (OPON IMO)

The governor of Nigeria’s Osun state says his administration has been implementing measures to improve the quality of high school education in the state.

As part of the effort, Governor Rauf Aregbesola says the state has provided all public high school students with free handheld digital tablets computers to help with their school work and also is rebuilding public sector elementary and secondary schools.

“We are committed to human capacity development in all its ramifications, and if that is genuine then education must play a principal role,” said Aregbesola.

“We just introduced a tool for learning called ‘tablet of knowledge.’ It is an electronic platform with three segments; the first segment is the E-library covering all the subjects being taught in the state. The second is the test segment, where you have 40,000 questions, and the third segment is where students have audio interaction with their teachers,” he said.

Aregbesola said he hoped the tablet computers would help bridge the growing divide between students in developing countries and the advanced countries.

“We are with this divide. Removing the digital divide existing between the children of the third world, where access to digital technology is almost impossible, this perhaps has the solution to that divide,” he said.

Aregbesola said the state has increased education funds for running primary elementary schools from N7-million ($44,053) per annum to N 427 million ($2,686,211), and also increased funding for secondary schools from N170-million ($1,069,840) to N424-million per year ($2,668,338).

He said the state government has signed a partnership agreement with private local fabric manufacturers to provide free school uniforms and help to improve a school lunch program.

Some critics, however, have accused some state governments of using the idea of improving education to help hide financial corruption. Additionally, some critics have accused Aregbesola is using Osun state programs as a platform to launch a future presidential bid in Nigeria, an allegation he denies.

“We are doing this in collaboration with beneficiaries and financial institutions. For example the government is not involved at all in the school feeding system; the banks supply the meals to the pupils,” Aregbesola said. “The government’s role is to ensure the quality of the meal and the level of hygiene of the vendors,” he said. “So the issue of parochial or corrupt interest is removed, and this we do consciously for transparency.”

WITH FRSC, LASTMA, VIO AND POLICE THE ROADS ARE NOT SAFE

Yesterday another container fell of a truck and landed on a van (Eko Meat) along Agege motor road Lagos, leading to deaths of passengers in the van. The role of the traffic agencies is to ensure safer road for commuters and drivers but instead of motoring trucks or vehicles that are completely dangerous on our raods, they station self at almost every corners of Lagos state stopping vehicles that are good for the purpose of extorting money giving one silly or stupid reasons.

Containers falling off trucks have welcome trend in Lagos, people are been killed and the FRSC, LASTMA, VIO AND THE POLICE care not, as long as they keep extorting money from vehicles owners. Even some of these trucks did not and can never pass mot test, they are still allow on our roads. Also they are suppose to be in the capacity to determine on the spot if trucks should carry the load as specified.

Today, going to my office between Jibowu and Idi oro there are Police, FRSC, LASTMA and VIO check points, they purposely ignore commercial vehicles and trucks that are completly of the road. I think it is time government merge this agencies together maybe something meaningful can come out. I wonder how our road will be safe if those who are with the responsibility are not doing their jobs.

My advice to drivers is not to get closer or stay by the side of truck with containers on them, God will continue to protect us from terrors on our raods

WHEN THE PRESIDENT PREFARE SELECT TO ELECTION

A democratic process that brought Governor Rotimi Amaechi back as the Chairman of Nigeria Governor Forum 2013 was void by the President G.E. Jonathan and the PDP gang leaders on the bases that Governor Jang of Jos was selected by the party. The people of Nigeria need to check and act fast on this as we approach 2015 general election. I am of the view that the President and his gang are planning to impose self on us all.

It is a shame that PDP can come out in the open over this issue, democracy is the government of the people and for the few or association of president. Democracy did not tell out, we should agree on issues of national interest because are in the same party even if the party is taking the country back. Also, it is clear that PDP is not the only party represented at the Governors Forum. it is clear how PDP celebrate corruption in all areas of our country. What a Shame.

I hope the Governor of APC; ACN, ANPP, APGA, CPC and few sensible governors in PDP will stand against corruption just like every Nigerians stood by the President after the death of President Umar Yahadua when some political hoodlums want to hijack the takeover process. Nigerians are watching
